The Rightly Guided Caliphs

Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali — leadership after the Prophet ﷺ

The Khulafa-e-Rashideen (Rightly Guided Caliphs) led the Muslim community after Prophet Muhammad ﷺ's death in 632 CE.

1. Abu Bakr (632-634 CE): First caliph, the Prophet's closest companion. Compiled the Quran into one book after many memorisers (huffaz) died at the Battle of Yamama. Fought the **Ridda Wars** (Wars of Apostasy) against tribes that abandoned Islam. Known as **As-Siddiq** (The Truthful).

2. Umar ibn al-Khattab (634-644 CE): Expanded the Islamic state across Persia, Syria, Egypt, and Jerusalem. Established the **Islamic calendar** (Hijri), **Bayt al-Mal** (public treasury), and a sophisticated administrative system. Known as **Al-Farooq** (The Distinguisher). Assassinated by a Persian slave.

3. Uthman ibn Affan (644-656 CE): Standardised the **Quran** into one official text (Uthmanic codex), sending copies to major cities. Expanded the navy. Known as **Dhun-Nurain** (Possessor of Two Lights — married two of the Prophet's daughters). Assassinated during a revolt.

4. Ali ibn Abi Talib (656-661 CE): The Prophet's cousin and son-in-law. Faced civil wars: **Battle of the Camel** (vs Aisha) and **Battle of Siffin** (vs Muawiyah). Known for justice and scholarship. Assassinated by a Kharijite.

The Uthmanic Quran — From Madinah to Museums in Pakistan

Uthman's standardisation of the Quran is one of history's most significant acts of textual preservation. Some of the oldest Quranic manuscripts are found in museums across the Muslim world. In Pakistan, the study of the Khulafa-e-Rashideen forms a core part of Islamiyat and is taught from primary school through O Levels.
