Major Themes of the Quran

God's nature, relationship with creation, and key Quranic passages

The Quran is the word of Allah, revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through Angel Jibreel over 23 years (610-632 CE). It has 114 surahs and 30 juz (parts).

Theme 1 — God in Himself (Tawhid):

  • Allah is One (Surah Al-Ikhlas 112): "Say, He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. Nor is there any equivalent to Him."
  • 99 Names of Allah (Al-Asma ul-Husna): Ar-Rahman (Most Merciful), Al-Malik (The Sovereign), Al-Alim (All-Knowing)

  • Theme 2 — God's Relationship with Creation:

  • Allah created the heavens and earth in six periods (Surah Al-A'raf 7:54)
  • Humans are khalifah (stewards) of the earth — responsibility to care for creation
  • Everything in the universe is a sign (ayah) of Allah's existence

  • Theme 3 — God's Messengers:

  • Prophets sent to every nation with the same message: worship One God
  • Key prophets: Adam, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, Muhammad ﷺ (Seal of the Prophets)
  • The Quran confirms and completes previous revelations (Torah, Zabur, Injeel)
  • Key Points to Remember

    • 1Quran: 114 surahs, revealed over 23 years
    • 2Tawhid: absolute Oneness of Allah (Surah Al-Ikhlas)

Surah Al-Ikhlas — Recited in Every Pakistani Home

Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112) is among the first surahs Pakistani children memorise. Its four verses encapsulate Tawhid — the core of Islamic theology. It's recited in daily prayers, at funerals, and is considered equal to one-third of the Quran in meaning. Understanding its theological significance is essential for O Level Islamiyat.
