How to turn English revision into marks

Strong English answers are built from purpose, audience, evidence, and deliberate language choices. Fancy vocabulary cannot rescue a response that ignores the task or uses quotations without analysis.

Answer method

  1. Underline the task, audience, purpose, form, and required viewpoint before planning.
  2. Select precise evidence and analyse how the wording or structure shapes meaning.
  3. Build paragraphs around one clear point rather than moving through the text line by line.
  4. Edit for logic, register, sentence control, and accuracy after the full response exists.

Common traps

  1. Retelling the passage instead of analysing the writer's choices.
  2. Naming a technique without explaining the effect in this context.
  3. Using memorised openings, dramatic claims, or vocabulary that does not fit the audience.
  4. Editing only spelling while leaving weak organisation and unsupported points unchanged.

Practice rhythm

  1. Annotate a short passage and rank the three strongest pieces of evidence.
  2. Write one point-evidence-analysis paragraph, then cut every sentence that does not serve it.
  3. Transform the same information for two different audiences or purposes.
  4. Read the response aloud and complete separate content, structure, and accuracy checks.
