Environment & Ecology

Understanding our environment

Ecology studies how living organisms interact with each other and their environment. An ecosystem is a community of organisms with their physical environment.

Every ecosystem has three functional groups:

  • Producers — make their own food through photosynthesis (plants, algae).
  • Consumers — eat other organisms. Primary consumers eat plants. Secondary consumers eat herbivores. Tertiary consumers are top predators.
  • Decomposers — break down dead organisms into nutrients (bacteria, fungi).

  • Biodiversity means the variety of life in an area. Pakistan is rich in biodiversity — from snow leopards in the Himalayas to mangroves in Karachi.

    Pollution threatens biodiversity:

  • Air pollution — factories, vehicles, crop burning. Lahore frequently ranks among the world's most polluted cities.
  • Water pollution — industrial waste in rivers like the Ravi and Lyari.
  • Soil pollution — overuse of pesticides in agricultural areas.

  • Pakistan's conservation efforts:

  • National Parks: Khunjerab, Hingol, Lal Suhanra
  • Mangrove restoration: Karachi's Indus Delta mangroves
  • 10 Billion Tree Tsunami — government reforestation programme

    Pakistan Example

The Indus Delta Mangroves — Pakistan's Natural Shield

Karachi's Indus Delta mangroves are vital ecosystems. Trees are producers, fish and crabs are consumers, bacteria are decomposers. Water pollution from Karachi's industry has damaged large areas, but restoration projects are replanting millions of seedlings.
