Set up a simple past-paper error log, review it on a schedule, and stop repeating the same exam mistakes.
Doing more past papers is useful only when each paper changes what you do next. If you attempt a paper, glance at the score, then open another one, the same weak topic can follow you for months. An error log turns papers into a feedback system. It is not a beautiful notebook project; it is a short record of mistakes you will actually revisit.
Set up one page or spreadsheet
Use a notebook, notes app or spreadsheet. The format matters less than using it after every marked paper. Make these columns: date; paper and question; topic; error type; what I wrote or did; correct rule or method; next retry date; result on retry.
For example:

Do not write “careless mistake” as the whole diagnosis. It feels honest but gives no action. Replace it with the specific cause: copied 0.06 as 0.6; forgot a unit; misread “compare”; used an equation outside its condition; did not label graph axes.
Attempt first, mark second, learn third
Treat practice papers like practice, not like a hunt for answers. Work under a reasonable time limit, with only the materials allowed for that paper. Mark only after you have committed to your answer. Use the mark scheme carefully, but also read the question again. Sometimes a student “knows” the answer from the scheme yet cannot see why their wording did not meet the task.
When marking, code each lost mark. A compact system works well:
- K: knowledge not remembered.
- U: understood poorly or mixed ideas.
- A: could not apply the idea to this question.
- M: method, algebra or calculation error.
- R: reading or command-word error.
- P: presentation, unit, label or layout error.
- T: timing; question was left or rushed.
One question may have more than one code, but choose the first cause where possible. A wrong final calculation because you chose the wrong formula is not mainly arithmetic; it is a method choice.
Write corrections that teach future-you
The correction should be short enough to scan before an exam. “Revise chapter 4” is too broad. Better entries look like these:
- “For percentage decrease, divide the change by the original value, then multiply by 100.”
- “In a graph description, state the trend and support it with values; do not explain unless asked.”
- “For a fair test, change one independent variable and keep named controls constant.”
Then redo the exact question without looking. If you can only copy the model solution, you have not repaired the gap. Add one different question from the same topic so you prove the rule transfers.
Use the 1–3–7 review rhythm
Schedule the first retry one day later, another roughly three days later, and a final check about a week later. It need not be perfect. The point is to meet the error more than once, with a little forgetting in between.
At each review, cover the correction and answer from memory. If you get it right twice, move it to a “stable” list. If you miss it again, return to the lesson, textbook section or teacher question that explains the foundation. More papers will not fix a misconception you have never properly learned.
Run a weekly diagnosis, not a score obsession
On Friday or Sunday, total error codes rather than only marks. Three papers with low marks can teach different lessons: perhaps your knowledge is fine but timing is weak, or calculations are strong but data questions are vague. Choose the top two patterns for the coming week.
Example weekly decision: “I have five R errors and four P errors in Biology. I will spend Monday on command words, Tuesday on graph/table language, and use a ten-minute final-check routine in every practice set.” This is much more useful than declaring, “I will study Biology harder.”
Make the log small enough to survive busy weeks
You do not need to log every mark lost. Start with errors that are repeated, high-value, or likely to return under pressure. A good cap is three to five entries per paper. For each entry, make one action. If your log becomes 12 pages of copied mark schemes, it becomes revision guilt instead of revision help.
Keep a separate “silly errors checklist” on the inside cover: read units; answer every subpart; show working; label diagrams; check sign; check significant figures; return to skipped questions. This is not an excuse to ignore the cause, but it protects easy marks on exam day.
Adapt it for different subjects
For Mathematics, log the trigger and method: “factorise before cancelling”, “draw a diagram and label known sides”, “round at the end.” For sciences, record wording and practical thinking: “repeat readings and calculate a mean”, “state controlled variables by name”, “distinguish accuracy from reliability.” For essay subjects, log evidence choice, paragraph structure and the exact command word.
For Computer Science, include a trace table or corrected pseudocode. For languages, keep a list of recurring grammar patterns and a sentence you can produce correctly. The system stays the same: identify, correct, retry, space, review.
Your post-paper checklist
- Mark while the paper is still fresh.
- Add only the most useful three to five errors.
- Write a specific correction in your own words.
- Schedule retries, not just “revision.”
- Redo one similar question.
- Review your error-code totals once each week.
Past papers are not a score machine. They are a map of where your next hour should go. Keep the log honest, keep it short, and har dafa mistake ko next attempt ka plan bana do.
