1. The Percentage Trick
Finding 15% of 80 is the same as finding 80% of 15 (= 12). Use whichever is easier to calculate!
2. Multiplying by 11
To multiply any 2-digit number by 11: add the digits and put the sum in the middle. 34 x 11 = 3_(3+4)_4 = 374. If the sum > 9, carry over.
3. The Bazaar Discount Formula
Original price x (1 - discount/100) = sale price. Rs 5000 with 30% off = 5000 x 0.7 = Rs 3500. Quick mental math at Eid sales!
4. Squaring Numbers Ending in 5
Take the tens digit, multiply by (tens digit + 1), then append 25. 35² = 3x4 = 12, append 25 = 1225 75² = 7x8 = 56, append 25 = 5625
5. The Cross-Multiply Shortcut for Simultaneous Equations
For equations like 2x + 3y = 12 and 4x - y = 5: Cross multiply to eliminate one variable quickly instead of lengthy substitution.
6. BODMAS — Always!
3 + 4 x 2 = 11, NOT 14. Pakistani students lose easy marks by ignoring order of operations.
7. Converting Fractions to Decimals
Know your common fractions: 1/8 = 0.125, 3/8 = 0.375, 5/8 = 0.625, 7/8 = 0.875
8. Coordinate Geometry: Show a Recognised Method
Plot carefully, use gradients, distances or an area method covered by your current syllabus, and show each step. A shortcut only helps when you understand it and the method is acceptable for the question.
9. Negative Number Rules

10. Check Your Answer by Substitution

The Best Shortcut Is a Reliable Checking Routine
Before accepting an answer, ask four questions: Is the sign sensible? Is the size reasonable? Does it satisfy the original equation? Have I included the requested unit or degree of accuracy? These checks catch more lost marks than an impressive mental trick used without understanding.
For algebra, substitute the result back into the original expression. For geometry, compare the answer with the diagram's scale and known bounds. For probability, check that a probability lies between zero and one and that a complete set of outcomes totals one. For percentages, estimate first so a misplaced decimal becomes obvious.
Build an Error Ledger
Divide a page into topic, error, correct rule and retry date. Common categories include negative signs, order of operations, premature rounding, copying a value incorrectly and answering a different quantity from the one asked. Retry the question without looking at the solution, then solve a second question that uses the same idea in a different form.
Practise Calculator and Non-Calculator Thinking
Even when a calculator is allowed, write the mathematical setup before entering numbers. Keep enough intermediate precision and round only at the end unless the question instructs otherwise. Know how your calculator handles fractions, powers, standard form and angle modes, but make sure every method sits inside the current syllabus. A shortcut is valuable only when you can explain why it works.
